PNC Backs John Mahama Ahead of 2024 Election

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has formally announced its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the upcoming general elections. This significant decision was made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, 27th November 2024.

The endorsement follows the disqualification of the PNC’s presidential candidate, Bernard Monarh, by the Electoral Commission (EC) due to errors in his nomination forms, including alleged forged signatures. Attempts to challenge this decision were unsuccessful, as the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Richard Apietu, dismissed the party’s injunction application on Monday, 21st November.

Speaking at a press conference on 27th November, PNC National Chairman Sampson Asaki Awingobit explained that the NEC’s decision to support Mahama was the result of careful deliberations.

“We met NEC and deliberated between the NPP and the NDC. At the end of the day, NEC decided that PNC cannot go to the current government and their presidential candidate. However, the PNC agreed that we have to throw our weight behind the opposition NDC party and its presidential candidate, His Excellency, the former President John Dramani Mahama, for the coming 7th December 2024 General Election,” Awingobit said.

The PNC chairman encouraged members to rally behind the party’s parliamentary candidates while calling on the NDC to support PNC candidates in constituencies where they are contesting.

“We also hope that wherever the PNC parliamentary candidate will be, the NDC should also vote for them. And when we win in Parliament, we will definitely work with the NDC to become the majority caucus,” Awingobit added.

The PNC is urging all its members to vote for John Dramani Mahama in the December polls as they look forward to a strong alliance with the NDC in the next Parliament.
