Legendary Ghanaian musician and saxophonist Teddy Osei, a founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa, has passed away at the age of 88.
The news of his death was confirmed by Bessa Simons, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (GHAMRO), during an interview on Hitz FM. Teddy Osei died on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Born in Kumasi in December 1937, Osei’s passion for music began during his college years in Sekondi, where he learned to play the saxophone.
After a stint as a building inspector, he formed “The Comets,” a band that gained moderate success in Ghana. In 1962, he traveled to London with a government grant to further his studies in music and drama, eventually founding Osibisa in 1969.

The band became an international sensation in the 1970s, pioneering the Afro-rock genre and leaving an indelible mark on global music.
