John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to prioritize the revival of Ghana’s sports sector if elected into office. Speaking during a campaign tour, Mahama expressed concern over the steady decline of sports in the country under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Highlighting the struggles of the Ghana Premier League, the women’s national teams, and the once-formidable Black Stars, Mahama emphasized the need for urgent intervention to restore Ghana’s sports to its former glory.
Mahama did not hold back in attributing the challenges to what he described as the mismanagement of the NPP government. “The elephant has come and destroyed everything in this country. Today, even the Black Stars cannot score goals,” he lamented, referencing the national team’s poor performance in recent years.
Under the NPP administration, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a dismal campaign, marking their first AFCON absence in two decades. Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration would work tirelessly to rebuild the sports sector and revitalize the Black Stars, restoring the pride of Ghanaian football.

Beyond football, Mahama outlined plans to invest in all facets of Ghanaian sports to support youth development and enhance national representation on the global stage. He stressed that a revitalized sports sector would not only boost national morale but also create opportunities for young athletes to excel.
By addressing these challenges, Mahama aims to make sports a cornerstone of his vision for a prosperous and united Ghana, promising tangible results that will rekindle hope among Ghanaians.
