Marc Guéhi Faces Possible FA Charge for Displaying “I Love Jesus” on Rainbow Armband

England and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi may face disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) after writing “I love Jesus” on his rainbow captain’s armband during a match against Newcastle on November 30, 2024.

The armband was part of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. However, FA regulations prohibit political or religious messages on equipment, and Guéhi’s actions could be seen as a violation, potentially leading to sanctions.

Guéhi, the son of a church minister and a devout Catholic, has often spoken about his faith’s role in his life. In a 2021 interview, he shared, “I’ve grown up loving God… my faith is definitely a big part of my life.” While his decision to display a religious message has sparked controversy, it also highlights the complex interplay between personal beliefs and professional responsibilities in modern football.

Guéhi’s situation comes amid another incident involving Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, who chose not to wear the rainbow armband due to his Muslim faith. Ipswich Town issued a statement supporting inclusivity while respecting Morsy’s decision.
